This article will describe how the ESD capacitor used in the PCBs helps reduce the risk of equipment getting damaged due to ESD.

1) Setup: First of all please understand this set-up so, that we can proceed further.

ESDObj1 - object which has got some charges on it and can transfer the charges. Example: Humans, Cloths, Machines etc.
ESDObj2 - Equipment which is vulnerable to ESD and we want to protect.

2) First of all what is ESD ?

CAPACITOR

Capacitor : Two parallel conducting sheets separated by dielectric.
Dielectric : A non-conducting material. Can also be called as an insulator.

So, the capacitor is represented as two parallel lines.
Please understand that there is physically a gap between the two plates.
